FRNSW Firefighters Unite: Beat The Burn’s Bold Vision for a $200,000 Fundraising Goal

In 2006, a group of four passionate firefighters from FRNSW 020 Station Hurstville embarked on a mission to make a difference in the lives of children at FRNSW 002 Station, The Burns Unit at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. What started as a modest bike ride covering 400km over four days has evolved into a powerful annual fundraising event known as the 400in4 Charity Ride, raising over $1,000,000 for the Burns Unit since its inception. The journey, however, took an unexpected turn in 2020, leading to the creation of a virtual event named ‘Beat The Burn.’

Inspiration and Evolution:

“In 2006, we had a vision to support kids at FRNSW 002 Station’s Burns Unit. The 400in4 Charity Ride became an annual tradition, consistently raising over $100,000 each year.” Over the years, this event has become a symbol of camaraderie among firefighters, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose.

Due to the challenges posed by the pandemic in 2020, the firefighters faced a choice: do nothing or go virtual. “In just three weeks, we created ‘Beat The Burn,’ a virtual event that raised $86,000. It was more than a fundraiser; it was a new way to support the Burns Unit.”

Memorable Moments and Impactful Stories:

While the 400in4 Charity Ride showcased the resilience of firefighters, it also highlighted the strength of burn survivors. A pivotal moment came when burn survivor Karl Madderom joined the ride from Sydney to Brisbane. Despite significant injuries, Karl led the pack, becoming an inspiration to others. “Karl’s determination reminds us of the resilience of these kids, and we hope to be positive role models for them.” These powerful stories have become a driving force behind the continued success of Beat the Burn, fuelling a sense of purpose among participants.

Balancing Physical Challenges and Emotional Connection:

The physical challenges of Beat the Burn, described as a week of “gears, beers, and tears,” are intentionally designed to honour the kids at FRNSW 002 Station. “We encourage our firefighters to embrace the pain, knowing it’s nothing compared to what these kids endure.” The unique combination of physical exertion and emotional connection creates an atmosphere of empathy and unity among participants, fostering a deep appreciation of the children’s struggles and a shared commitment to making a positive impact.

Every day during the event, participants dedicate their efforts to a child currently undergoing treatment at the Burns Unit, creating a powerful emotional connection. “Acknowledging these kids’ stories helps us stay focused on our mission.”

Liam’s Mission and Impact:

Junior Firefighter Liam’s mission to visit every FRNSW fire station adds a heart warming dimension to Beat The Burn. “Liam is a good reminder of why we joined the job – to help people and be positive role models.” Liam’s enthusiasm and fundraising efforts contribute to the overall positive atmosphere of the events. His journey exemplifies the ripple effect of compassion, inspiring not only firefighters but the broader community to come together for a meaningful cause.

The reach and affect that Beat the Burn and fundraisers like Liam can have is only as big as we all make it. So I encourage all stations to help us on this mission by getting involved and helping share all our fundraising and burn prevention messaging in the lead up to March.

Contributions to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead:

Beat The Burn’s impact on the Burns Unit extends beyond fundraising. Recent initiatives include funding research on hand burn injuries, resulting in a significant reduction in contracture cases. The funds have also supported the purchase of specialised equipment, wages for Burns Nurse Practitioners, and social support services for young burn survivors and their families. These tangible contributions underline the transformative power of collective efforts, turning good care into exceptional care for those in need.

David Weir Memorial Trophies:

The event pays tribute to the late David Weir, a dedicated firefighter who played a vital role in community engagement. The David Weir Memorial Trophies honour top fundraisers, cyclists, runners, rowers, and the King of the Mountain. “These trophies symbolise the commitment to Dave’s legacy and inspire participants to excel.” This recognition serves as a powerful motivator, acknowledging individual achievements and encouraging participants to push their limits in support of a greater cause.

This year, we will be awarding the David Weir Memorial Trophies in the following categories: Highest Fundraiser, Best Cyclist, Best Runner, Best Rower, King of the Mountain.

So if you want to take out one of these prestigious trophies, get fundraising and make sure you track all your kilometres throughout the week on our leader boards, or join us in Jindabyne to take out the King of the Mountain.

Looking ahead to 2024:

Beat the Burn has ambitious goals for 2024, aiming to double fundraising, increase participant numbers at the Jindabyne Base Camp, and expand community involvement. The committee envisions an even broader reach across NSW communities to raise awareness about burn injuries and prevention.

Joining the movement:

The events are for Fire & Rescue NSW staff as the event is tied directly to their nominated charity. However, if you are not FRNSW staff and would like to donate to the cause, you can do that directly through their website here.

For those unable to attend the Basecamp in Jindabyne, the invitation to contribute remains open. “Setup a fundraising profile for your FRNSW Station, encourage your crew members to join, and go all in for kids this March.” Additionally, they encourage individuals or businesses with ideas for fundraising initiatives to reach out and contribute to the cause.

You can find more information on how to support Beat the Burn over at their website and facebook pages.
