Fire & Rescue NSW and the NSW Rural Fire Service responded to reports of a factory fire in UR3R Eastern Creek on the afternoon of 1/7/23. When crews arrived, a waste processing facility was fully involved in fire that was threatening to spread throughout the vast complex.
Firefighters immediately deployed multiple hose lays to offensively attack the fire, utilising the internal hydrant ring main of the building. Crews from both the NSW Rural Fire Service and Fire & Rescue NSW fought to stop the fire from spreading through the conveyor system at the facility, which links factories together. As the fire started to spread through the building’s roof, Aerial Pumper 97 was deployed and utilised for aerial fire attack.
Large numbers of crews from both services using breathing apparatus were deployed throughout, hampered by a maze of walkways and gantries surrounded by conveyor systems and heavy machinery. Firefighters were able to put out the majority of the fire after more than two hours of offensive fire attack work.
Work continued through the night, focusing on extinguishing deep-seated fires that were burning in regions of rubbish and recycling storage around the building.
